If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I’m an avid “crossfitter.” This morning, I was at Triforce CrossFit and after class a member’s son shaved his head to raise money to support The Phoenix Regiment; a charity that allows injured veterans and first responders to get the therapy they so desperately need. He was able to raise 5K from this! This is absolutely INCREDIBLE! The power of one child’s haircut will echo far beyond the length of time it will take for him to grow his hair again.
So it got me thinking. What if during this summer every child does something for a charity? As a licensed mental health counselor, I can attest to the positive power charity work has on kids mental and emotional health. In fact, this is why I started my non-profit, Sabita Speaks. Even though my daughter, Sabita has autism and is non-verbal I knew she would greatly benefit from being of service to others and guess what??? I was right.
When Sabita is able to give an iPad to a child without a voice through her own charity, her eyes light up like ONLY they do when she does this. No words need to be spoken to understand the power of that exchange between two kids!
So here’s my challenge to you this summer: collaborate with your child to find a charity THEY want to support and come up with a way they can do that. Have them share what they are doing with their friends and encourage them to do it too. This is how love is spread.
Comment below on what your child is doing so we can celebrate them and their contribution to a better world! It doesn’t have to be grand to be impactful as we can change the world by helping ONE person at a time. 💜
